Nikol & Goetz and the lawyers working for Nikol & Goetz are regulated and supervised by the Freiburg Bar Association (Rechtsanwaltskammer), Eisenbahnstr. 66, 79098 Freiburg, Germany.

All lawyers at Nikol & Goetz are admitted in Germany to practise as Rechtsanwalt and are members of the Freiburg Bar Association (Rechtsanwaltskammer), Eisenbahnstr. 66, 79098 Freiburg, Germany.

Additionally, Matthias Goetz is admitted in England & Wales to practise as Solicitor and is a member of the Solicitors Regulation Authority, The Cube, 199 Wharfside Street, Birmingham, B1 1RN, United Kingdom. In his role as Solicitor, he is personally subject to the supervisory authority of the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

Professional Rules and Regulations

Nikol & Goetz and the lawyers working with Nikol & Goetz are subject to applicable professional rules and regulations in Germany which are available on the website of the German Bar Association (Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer) at http://www.brak.de under the section “Berufsrecht”. 

These include, without limitation:

  • the German Federal Lawyers Act (Bundesrechtsanwaltsordnung (BRAO))
  • the German Code of Conduct for Lawyers (Berufsordnung für Rechtsanwälte (BORA))
  • the German Lawyers’ Fees Act (Rechtsanwaltsvergütungsgesetz (RVG))
  • the Code of Conduct for European Lawyers (Berufsregeln für Rechtsanwälte der Europäischen Union (CCBE))


In his role as Solicitor, Matthias Goetz is also personally subject to the Overseas and Cross-border Practice Rules of the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

In accordance with Rule 4.3 of the Transparency Rules of the Solicitors Regulation Authority, we bring to your notice the following:

  • Nikol & Goetz has a professional indemnity insurance in accordance with the relevant professional rules and regulations applicable in Germany. The Indemnity Insurance Rules of the Solicitors Regulation Authority do not apply to Nikol & Goetz or any of its lawyers.
  • The clients of Nikol & Goetz and its lawyers will not be eligible to apply for a grant from the Compensation Fund of the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Nikol & Goetz has a professional indemnity insurance with worldwide coverage which is provided by AXA Versicherung AG, Colonia-Allee 10-20, 51067 Cologne, Germany. The insurance cover does not apply to liability claims arising from any of the following:

  • legal advice or related activities provided by law firms or offices established or maintained outside Germany;
  • advice on or in connection with non-European law; or
  • activities before non-European courts.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

In the event of disputes between lawyers and their clients, the German Conciliatory Body for the Legal Profession (Schlichtungsstelle der Rechtsanwaltschaft), Rauchstraße 26, 10787 Berlin (tel.: +49(0)30 2844417-0; fax: +49(0)30 2844417-12; email: schlichtungsstelle@s-d-r.org,  § 191f BRAO) provides alternative dispute resolution measures. The German Conciliatory Body for the Legal Profession is also the statutory consumer conciliatory body under the German Consumer Dispute Settlement Act (Verbraucherstreitbeilegungsgesetz).

The parties may also opt for alternative dispute resolution measures offered by the Freiburg Bar Association (Rechtsanwaltskammer), Eisenbahnstr. 66, 79098 Freiburg, Germany, http://www.rak-freiburg.de (§ 73 Abs. 2 Nr. 3 i.V.m. § 73 Abs. 5 BRAO).

The European Commission provides a platform to consumers for online dispute resolution that can be found under http://ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr/ to settle disputes that relate to sales or services agreements.

Nikol & Goetz is open to the use of alternative dispute resolution measures, subject to prior consultation between Nikol & Goetz and the relevant client.
